Lasers are becoming more useful now. There are many modifications in them nowadays. Scientists are doing great work and brought two new categories of lasers. Mainly lasers require high power to operate that is known as pump power. The main concept is that smaller the size of laser higher the pump power. Today I am going to introduce you with two new lasers:
Smallest room temperature laser and the second one is threshold less laser.
The “thresholdless” laser is also known as no waste laser as it funnels all its photons into lasing without any waste.
The two new lasers needs extremely low pumping power that is nice because usually lasers require very high power for lasing as the laser shrink to Nano sizes. This small size and low power consumption make them very useful for future optical circuits, which is used in tiny computer chips.
The “thresholdless” laser may also help researchers as they develop artificially structured materials that are already being studied for applications from super lenses that are used to see individual viruses or DNA molecules to cloaking devices that refract light around an object to make it invisible.
As we already discussed the smallest the laser higher its pump power so to overcome this problem researchers introduce a new design that uses quantum electrodynamics effects in coaxial Nano cavities to abate the threshold constraint.
The room temperature laser is almost half a micron in diameter. There is one new feature available in these lasers. These are scalable in size means they could be shrunk to even smaller sizes. This feature may be used as creating the metamaterials with structures smaller than wavelength of light. Other applications are high resolution display, bio chemical sensors. Researchers are also looking for the new methods to pump the lasers electrically instead of optically.
